A physiotherapy session costs on average 40-70€ in a private practice in Italy, with peaks of 80-100€ in big cities and for specialised techniques. A home visit costs more (60-120€), while online physiotherapy has a free introductory first consultation and sessions at 29,90€.

Type of session Average cost
Private practice (standard) 40-70€
Big cities (Milan, Rome, Florence) 50-100€
At home 60-120€
Specialised techniques (osteopathy, instrumental) 80-120€
Online physiotherapy (Ri-Hub) 29,90€ (the first consultation is free)

How much a physiotherapist costs therefore depends on the area, specialisation, length and format of the session. Below you will find the complete guide to prices, what influences the cost and how to save without giving up quality.

⚠ Important: read this before continuing

The figures on this page are indicative ranges taken from the practices' public price lists, not an official tariff: in physiotherapy nobody sets the price and each professional sets their own. Use them to get your bearings, not as a quote.

Is it worth starting a programme? Answer a few questions: you register and see who will be following you, a physiotherapist registered with the professional register and chosen for your case, whom you message in a chat. If you would rather hear their voice, the first consultation is free and we look at your situation together.

How Much Physiotherapy Costs: Average Prices in Italy

In a private practice an individual session costs on average between 40€ and 70€. The range is wide because it depends mainly on two things: where the practice is and what kind of work is done during the session.

In big cities (Milan, Rome, Florence) it often goes up to between 50€ and 100€, while in smaller towns it usually stays below the national average.

Specialised techniques sit higher: osteopathy, sports physiotherapy or advanced instrumental therapies reach 80-120€ a session.

Home visits are the most expensive option of all, generally 60-120€, because in the price you are also paying for the physiotherapist's travel time. On what makes that figure go up or down, and on when it is still worth paying, we have a dedicated guide: how much home physiotherapy really costs.

If you are looking at home visits, first ask yourself why

There are two reasons, and they lead to two different answers.

If you cannot get around (after an operation, with a brace, with an elderly person at home) the hands need to come to you, and you should not have to look for them on your own: home attendance is decided by the physiotherapist following you online, based on your case, and they propose it to you. On the market a home session runs between 60 and 120€, because the price also includes the travel of whoever comes.

If instead you are thinking about it to avoid the journey (the traffic, the parking, the hour of leave from work) then you are paying 60-120€ to solve a logistics problem, not a clinical one. The video call solves that part: an individual session costs 29,90€, you do it from the room in which you will actually be exercising, and the physiotherapist sees your space and your objects instead of imagining them.

What remains is the part that cannot be done remotely: the hands-on work. It does not disappear, it changes place. If your case needs it, it is the physiotherapist following you who tells you so and sends you to one of ours near you, or has them come to you if getting out is not possible. Then the programme resumes online with them, without starting again from scratch. How the in-person session works.

How Much a Physiotherapist Earns per Session

It is the same figure seen from the other side, and it is worth saying because it is the question many people ask when faced with a quote. The fee you pay, 40-70€ in a practice, is what the professional takes in, not what they keep: out of it come the rent of the space, the equipment, contributions and taxes, professional insurance and the compulsory refresher courses. It is also the reason the same hour costs less remotely: there is no practice to maintain.

The case is different for someone who works as an employee of a facility: there what they receive is a salary, and the fee displayed to the public is decided by the facility, not by the individual physiotherapist.

How Much Physiotherapy Costs City by City

Prices change quite a lot from one city to another, and not only between North and South: what weighs in is the cost of the practice's rent, the competition between professionals and how widespread cover by insurance and supplementary health funds is. These are the ranges most often met in the public price lists of private practices, for a standard individual session.

City Single session Cycle of 10 sessions
Milan 50 – 90 € 450 – 800 €
Rome 45 – 80 € 400 – 720 €
Turin 40 – 70 € 360 – 630 €
Florence 45 – 80 € 400 – 720 €
Bologna 45 – 75 € 400 – 680 €
Genoa 40 – 70 € 360 – 630 €
Naples 30 – 60 € 270 – 540 €
Palermo 30 – 55 € 270 – 500 €
Small and medium-sized towns 35 – 60 € 320 – 540 €

Two honest warnings about this table. The first: they are indicative ranges taken from public price lists, not an official tariff, because in physiotherapy there is no set price, each professional sets their own. The second: the lowest price is not automatically the biggest saving, because what counts is how many sessions are really needed to solve the problem. Thirty euros a session for twenty useless sessions costs more than fifty euros for eight right ones.

With online physiotherapy the city does not matter: the session costs 29,90€ wherever you are, because you are not paying the rent of a practice in the centre.

"Physiotherapist near me": how much does proximity really weigh

It is the way the search is almost always done, and on price it has a double and opposite effect. On one hand, near costs more where rents are high: it is the reason the same session goes from 30-60 € in Naples to 50-90 € in Milan, and searching for "near me" in a city centre almost always means fishing from the top range. On the other, proximity removes a cost that never enters the sum: the time to go and come back, two or three times a week, for weeks.

What proximity really buys is the hands-on touch (manual therapy, passive treatments, the assessment that requires touching). What it does not buy is the part that in most programmes weighs the most: the exercise, the choice of which to do, the progression and the checking of how you perform it. That part works remotely too, and its price does not change with the neighbourhood.

The point is that you do not have to choose between the two. With us the programme starts online, and if your case needs hands-on work it is your physiotherapist who tells you so and sends you to one of ours near you: you pay for the in-person session when it is really needed, not for the neighbourhood the practice is in, every week. How it works, and why you will not find a list of addresses to choose from, we explain on the page about the in-person session; if instead you start from your area, the list of cities is at physiotherapist near you.

If you want to start from the prices in your area, we have collected them city by city: Milan, Rome, Naples, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Padua.

How Much Physiotherapy Costs by Type of Treatment

The other variable that moves the price is what is done to you during the session.

Some questions are more specific than this table can answer, and have a dedicated page. If you are looking for the cost of physiotherapy for a particular body area: back pain, neck, knee, shoulder, hip, ankle. And if the prescription says fisiokinesiterapia, it is the same thing called by the name used by the national health service.

Type of treatment Indicative cost per session
General physiotherapy / assessment 35 – 60 €
Post-operative rehabilitation 40 – 70 €
Postural re-education 45 – 75 €
Sports physiotherapy 45 – 80 €
Manual therapy / osteopathy 55 – 90 €
Instrumental therapies (tecar, laser, ultrasound) 25 – 50 € per single application
Lymphatic drainage 40 – 70 €

Pay attention to the row for instrumental therapies: they cost less because often they are not a real session with the physiotherapist, but the application of a machine, sometimes on several patients at once. For the most common musculoskeletal complaints the international guidelines indicate as first-choice treatment therapeutic exercise and education about movement, not passive therapies: a cycle made only of tecar may turn out cheap per session and useless in total.

Another row to read carefully is postural re-education: it is often bought by the parents of a teenager who has just been found to have scoliosis, committing to long and expensive cycles. Before signing a package it is worth knowing what really moves the curve and what does not, and we have put it in black and white here: scoliosis in teenagers, exercises and brace.

Factors That Influence the Price

Length. A thirty-minute session costs less than a sixty-minute one, but the comparison only makes sense when the content is the same: always ask how long it lasts and what is included, because sometimes the half hour is just the application of a machine.

Specialisation. Someone with advanced training or who works in less common fields applies higher rates. It is not an arbitrary surcharge: on a specific problem it can mean getting to the result sooner.

Location. A practice in the centre pays a rent that ends up in the price of the session. In the total sum, include your own travel too: two hours for the outward journey, waiting and return, twice a week, are a real cost even if you do not pay it on an invoice.

Number of sessions. Many practices propose packages at a reduced price for those who book a whole cycle. It is the factor that moves the final spend the most, and the one that almost nobody considers before starting.

Physiatrist, Physiotherapist, Osteopath: Who Does What and How Much It Costs

Before comparing prices it is worth knowing who you are paying, because they are different figures with different costs and confusion is common.

The physiatrist is a doctor specialised in physical and rehabilitation medicine. They examine, make diagnoses, can prescribe medicines and tests and draw up the rehabilitation plan. Their visit is a specialist visit: in private practice it generally costs the same as other specialist visits, more than a physiotherapy session, and with the national health service you pay the ticket.

The physiotherapist is the healthcare professional who delivers the treatment: assesses movement, sets up and runs the programme, and in Italy is accessible even without going through a doctor: for 73.7% of self-employed physiotherapists direct access is often or always the route by which patients arrive. The prices are those you find on this page.

The osteopath is not, in Italy, a healthcare figure equated with the first two in terms of route and access to the national health service; we talked about it in physiotherapist or osteopath.

In practice: if you need a medical diagnosis, a check-up or a prescription, the route is the physiatrist (or the orthopaedic doctor). If you need to be treated and got moving again, the route is the physiotherapist, and no intermediate step is needed: see physiotherapy without a prescription.

The Options for Saving

The SSN route. With a doctor's prescription, and within the conditions covered, you pay only the ticket (the Italian co-payment): often 30-50€. It is the cheapest option by far, but waiting lists can be long, and with an acute problem waiting three months has a cost that does not appear on an invoice. If you want the exact numbers, we have published the complete table of SSN tariffs for physiotherapy, code by code: the national health service recognises 12,35€ for an individual 30-minute session.

Insurance. Many supplementary health policies and company funds cover physiotherapy in part or in full. It is worth checking your cover before paying out of pocket: people often have it and do not know.

Telerehabilitation. With Ri-Hub the individual session costs 29,90€ for thirty minutes in which the physiotherapist watches only you, and in a group 29,90€ per person. The first consultation is free. A physiotherapist can recognise problems you did not know you had, correct your technique while you are doing it and adapt the programme to your condition: with Ri-Hub this happens from home, without travelling.

Group sessions. Some conditions are treated well in small groups, at a reduced rate. It is not right for everyone, but for certain programmes it is a viable route.

The Value of Treatment

The price of a session should be compared with the cost of not treating. A complaint that becomes chronic is paid for later, and paid for more: more sessions, medicines, sometimes surgery, days of work lost.

Then there is a part that cannot be written in euros. Walking without pain, getting back to running, finishing the working day without hunting for a position that does not hurt: it is the reason people go to the physiotherapist, and it is what counts.

And beware of the wrong comparison. Better a competent professional who closes the matter in six sessions than a cheap one who asks for twenty: the second costs more, even if the single session costs less.

Number of Sessions

The final spend is not decided by the rate, it is decided by how many sessions are needed. If the quote in front of you is for a package, the full sum is in how much ten sessions cost. An acute problem is often resolved in 4-8 sessions; a chronic situation or a post-operative one may require 12-20 or more.

In some programmes, moreover, the bulk of the work is done at home and the sessions serve to set up the exercises and correct them: it happens for example with rehabilitation of the pelvic floor, where understanding first whether you really need it is what makes you spend least.

Factor in maintenance too: in certain cases periodic follow-up sessions are needed even after the end of the programme, and it is right to know that beforehand.

The most useful advice we can give you is to ask, at the first consultation, for an estimate of the whole programme. An honest professional gives you a realistic forecast of how many sessions will be needed and of what happens if it does not work.

Online with Ri-Hub

With us the price depends on the format, and is declared beforehand: the individual thirty-minute session costs 29,90€, the one in a group 29,90€ per person. There is also the individual one-hour session at 49,90€, but that one cannot be bought: the physiotherapist proposes it to you when it is clinically needed (the first session after the consultation, or the one in which the programme changes).

Then there is the format that costs least of all, the thirty-minute quick group at 19,90€ per person. It is not an entry format and is not chosen at the start: it serves to keep the rhythm when the plan is already set up and the physiotherapist knows you.

Thirty minutes and not forty-five, and it is a choice: they are thirty minutes in which the physiotherapist watches only you. In a practice the session lasts longer, but part of it is spent alone on the couch with a machine switched on.

If it is a child who is having physiotherapy the sum changes: at developmental ages the session lasts longer and involves the parent too, so up to ten years old it is one hour at 59,90€, while from eleven to eighteen it goes back to the standard session at 29,90€. How it works is explained on the page for Ri-Hub Junior.

In pregnancy and after childbirth, instead, there is no surcharge: they are standard sessions at 29,90€, with the same free first consultation. What we treat and when it makes sense is on the page about physiotherapy in pregnancy and after childbirth.

You are not buying a reduced version: the available studies show that for many musculoskeletal conditions telerehabilitation achieves results comparable to in-person treatment. If you want to understand better who you are dealing with and what they do, we have written a guide on what a physiotherapist does.

Then there is time. No traffic, no waiting room, no leave from work: for people with rigid schedules it is often the difference between doing the programme and dropping it halfway.

When Not to Save

Price cannot be the only criterion. The competence of whoever is following you is what determines whether the problem is solved, and how quickly.

Always check that you are dealing with a physiotherapist with a degree and registered with the professional register. Relying on someone who is not qualified seems cheaper in the moment, but the risk is making worse a situation that was manageable.

Conclusion: Accessible Physiotherapy

The price of physiotherapy changes a lot depending on city, type of treatment and number of sessions: it is normal to find the same service at 35€ and at 90€. What you can control is how much you really need and who you have it done by.

With Ri-Hub you start from 29,90€ a session, and the first consultation is free: in twenty minutes we work out together what the problem is and how many sessions are needed, before you spend a euro. If you want to see first what a session is like, there is the page on how it works; if instead you want to know how it went for those who have already tried us, the reviews are here.

Frequently asked questions about the cost of physiotherapy

How much does a physiotherapy session cost?

A physiotherapy session in a private practice costs on average 40-70€, with peaks of 80-100€ in big cities and for specialised techniques. Online physiotherapy with Ri-Hub costs 29,90€ a session, and the first introductory consultation is free.

How much does a physiotherapist earn per session?

Of those 40-70€ the physiotherapist does not keep it all: the rent of the room, contributions, professional insurance, equipment and gaps in the diary all come out of it. In private practice, what is left net is generally less than half of the displayed fee. It is the reason a session cannot cost as much as would seem "fair" to someone looking only at the hour of work, and it is also the reason online costs less: there is no room.

How much do 10 sessions with a physiotherapist cost?

The sum is simple: 400-700€ in a private practice, 299€ online with us. But the question hides a problem, and it is worth saying so before handing over the money.

Nobody can know whether you need ten sessions before assessing you. The number ten does not come from a clinical study: it comes from the fact that cycles are sold in blocks. If they propose a package of ten before looking at you, you are buying blind, and if after the fourth you are fine, you have paid for the remaining six anyway.

We do not sell packages: the physiotherapist proposes sessions to you one at a time in the chat, after seeing you, and you accept the ones that convince you. How many are really needed depends on the case: we have written about it in how many physiotherapy sessions are needed.

How many physiotherapy sessions for the knee?

It depends on what is wrong with the knee, and the difference is huge: patellar tendinopathy, post-operative cruciate ligament recovery and osteoarthritis are not on the same scale. What can honestly be said is that in the programmes studied, work on the knee is measured in weeks of exercise, not in number of appointments, because the part that makes the difference is done at home between one session and the next, and the sessions serve to correct and to dose.

Anyone who gives you a number before seeing you move is guessing. The real criterion, and how you tell when it is over, is in how many sessions are really needed.

How much does home physiotherapy cost?

Home physiotherapy costs more, generally 60-120€ a session, to cover the physiotherapist's travel time. It is the most expensive of the options available, but for people who cannot get around it remains the right choice: details in the guide to home physiotherapy.

Is physiotherapy free with the SSN?

With a doctor's prescription and within the conditions covered, physiotherapy through the SSN (Italy's National Health Service) costs only the ticket (often 30-50€). Waiting lists, however, can be long.

Is physiotherapy deductible?

Yes: physiotherapy expenses with a doctor's prescription are deductible at 19% in the Italian income tax return, provided you keep the invoice and a traceable payment receipt.

How can you save on physiotherapy?

The main ways to save are: choosing online physiotherapy (29,90€ a session, individual or in a group, against the 35-70€ of a private practice), moving to the thirty-minute quick group at 19,90€ when the plan is already set up and you only need to keep the rhythm, making use of the 19% tax deduction in the Italian tax return and considering the SSN route when the waiting times allow.

Do you need a consultation?

Let's see whether a programme makes sense for you: a few questions about your case, you register, and you see who will be following you: a physiotherapist registered with the professional register, whom you message in a chat whenever you like. If you would rather hear them, the first consultation is free, lasts twenty minutes and commits you to nothing: they arrive having already read what you wrote, and together you decide whether and how to continue.

If you are weighing up a cycle, the sum and the question that really matters (whether you need ten sessions) are in how much 10 physiotherapy sessions cost. And if your case is the pelvic floor, the price follows its own rules: how much pelvic floor rehabilitation costs.

Before comparing prices it is worth knowing what you are buying, in minutes: how long a physiotherapy session lasts.

A cheaper route exists, but it is not right for everything: group physiotherapy, who does it and how well it works.

It depends on how many sessions are needed: a typical cycle is 8-12 sessions, so between 320€ and 900€ in a private practice depending on the city. It is the number that really counts: a low rate on a cycle that is too long costs more than a high rate on a targeted programme.

How much does tecar therapy or laser cost?
