A physiotherapy session for neck pain costs on average 45-70€ at a private clinic. The figure that matters, however, is not the single session but the full course: for neck pain you usually need 6-10 sessions, so the real spend is around 360-560€.

Where Cost per session Course of 8 sessions
Private clinic 45-70€ 360-560€
At home 60-120€ 480-960€
Big cities 60-90€ 480-720€
Online (Ri-Hub) 29,90€ 239,20€

To these amounts is almost always added the first assessment consultation: at a clinic it usually costs 50-80€ and is paid for.

Why the price of a single session tells you little

Anyone searching for "how much does physiotherapy for neck pain cost" has almost always had a stiff neck for days and wants to know how much getting out of it will cost, not how much an hour costs.

Two providers who charge the same price per session can lead to very different final bills, for three reasons:

  • the length of the session: 30 minutes at 50€ and 50 minutes at 60€ are not the same price;
  • how much time you spend with the physiotherapist: in some clinics a large part of the session is taken up by machines, with the professional present only at the start;
  • how many sessions they propose: a course of 15 sessions at 45€ costs more than one of 8 sessions at 60€.

Before looking at the price, always ask these three things. They are the difference between 400€ and 800€ for the same result.

How many sessions you really need for neck pain

International guidelines on neck pain agree on one point: effective treatment is active, that is, based on therapeutic exercise, not on repeated passive therapies.

The typical orders of magnitude:

  • common acute neck pain (stiff neck lasting a few days): 4-6 sessions;
  • recurrent or chronic neck pain: 8-12 sessions, with an important part of independent work between one meeting and the next;
  • cervicobrachialgia (pain that runs down the arm): the course is longer and must always be assessed first.

If at the first meeting someone proposes twenty sessions without having examined you, that is a warning sign to pay attention to.

The three items that push the bill up

Instrument-based therapies. Tecar, laser and ultrasound are often offered as add-on packages. For common neck pain the evidence in their favour is weak compared with exercise, and they can add hundreds of euros.

Home visits. These cost 30-70% more because you also pay for the professional's travel. For neck pain, where the work is mainly exercise and posture, the difference is rarely worth it.

Open-ended "maintenance" sessions. A course has a beginning and an end. If checks are needed after the course, they should be few and scheduled.

How to pay less without giving up quality

The 19% deduction. With a medical prescription and traceable payment, physiotherapy expenses can be deducted from your Italian income tax. On a 400€ course you get back about 76€. Keep the invoice and the receipt.

The Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (the national health service). With a referral (impegnativa) you only pay the co-payment (ticket), often 30-50€ for the whole course. The limit is waiting times, which for musculoskeletal physiotherapy can run to months.

Online physiotherapy. It is the option that lowers the bill the most, and neck pain is one of the areas where it works best: treatment is based on exercise, postural correction and movement education, all things that can be taught, corrected and checked well on a video call.

With Ri-Hub the first consultation is free: a physiotherapist registered with the Albo looks at your situation and tells you whether an online course makes sense for you, and the following sessions cost 29,90€. A course of 8 sessions costs 239,20€, compared with 360-560€ at a private clinic.

When you need to go in person instead

Honesty is worth more than a sale: online physiotherapy is not suitable for everyone. If neck pain comes with loss of strength in the arm, persistent tingling, dizziness or visual disturbances, or if it appeared after a trauma, an in-person medical assessment comes first.

In the free introductory consultation this is exactly what we check: whether your case is suitable or whether another route is better for you. If it is not, we tell you.

Want to know what it would cost in your case?

Start with the questionnaire: 20 minutes on a video call with a physiotherapist registered with the Albo. They tell you what you really need and how many sessions are needed, which is the number that decides the spend more than the rate. No credit card is needed, and if online treatment is not suitable for your case we tell you. Sessions cost 29,90€.

Questi esercizi sono generici. Il tuo no.
