A knee physiotherapy session costs on average 45-70€ in a private clinic in Italy. But the knee is the body area where a single session tells you less than any other: between tendinopathy and rehabilitation after a cruciate ligament operation, the total cost differs by a factor of four.
| Problem | Typical sessions | Cost of the course (private clinic) |
|---|---|---|
| Patellofemoral pain, tendinopathy | 6-10 | 270-700€ |
| After meniscectomy | 10-15 | 450-1.050€ |
| After cruciate ligament reconstruction | 20-40 | 900-2.800€ |
| After knee replacement | 20-30 | 900-2.100€ |
| Online (Ri-Hub) | n/a | 29,90€ per session |
The right question is not "how much does a session cost"
It is "how many sessions will I need". For a knee, the answer to that question is worth hundreds of euros.
Anterior knee pain from overload often resolves in 6-8 appointments plus independent work. Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament is a course lasting months, with different goals in each phase, and international guidelines speak of return-to-sport criteria that are assessed around 9-12 months.
When you ask for a quote, always ask how many sessions are planned and how often. A lower price per session on a course that is twice as long is not a saving.
What pushes up the bill for the knee
Post-operative phases take longer. A post-surgical session often lasts 50-60 minutes, compared with 30-40 for a standard session, and is priced accordingly.
Machines. For the knee, treatments such as tecar, laser, magnetotherapy and ultrasound are often offered. For muscle and tendon problems, the evidence in favour of therapeutic exercise is clearly stronger: instrumental therapies can play a supporting role, not a substitute one, and they can easily add 200-400€ to a course.
Frequency. Three sessions a week for two months is 24 sessions. Two a week with a good home programme often achieves the same result for half the spend.

The Italian National Health Service makes more sense for the knee than elsewhere
After a documented surgical operation, rehabilitation is often provided under the SSN, and on courses of 20-30 sessions the difference between the co-payment (ticket) and private rates is over a thousand euros. Waiting times remain the limit, but for a planned post-operative course the referral (impegnativa) can be requested in advance. It is always worth asking the surgeon before discharge.
Where online physiotherapy works well for the knee
For much of its length, knee rehabilitation is progressive strengthening and control of movement: quadriceps, glutes, control of valgus, relearning the walking pattern and then running. It is exercise work that depends on dosage and progression, exactly the kind of thing that can be guided and corrected on a video call, and that the patient carries out on their own between one session and the next anyway.
With Ri-Hub the first consultation is free: a physiotherapist on the professional register looks at your situation and tells you where you are and whether the online course suits you. Subsequent sessions cost 29,90€.
When in-person care is needed instead
It needs saying clearly: the first weeks after an operation require assessment and treatment in person, including wound checks, management of swelling, passive mobilisation and verification of the permitted load. The same applies if the knee gives way, locks in a position or swells significantly and suddenly: these situations must be assessed in person, and when in doubt, see a doctor first.
In the free first consultation this is the first thing we check. If your case is not suited to the online course, we will tell you.

Want to know what it would cost in your case?
Start with the questionnaire: 20 minutes on a video call with a physiotherapist on the professional register. They tell you what you really need and how many sessions are required, which is the number that decides the cost more than the rate does. No credit card is needed, and if the online course is not suited to your case, we will tell you. Sessions cost 29,90€.
